My 5th period students researched various aspects of local history. They wrote 2-3 page papers on their selected topics and brought visuals to use during their oral presentations. Some students chose to use their artistic talents while others were able to gather artifacts from people in the community. Topics included the Battle of Staunton River Bridge, local Native American tribes, the local Masonic lodge, the Saxe community, a noted local midwife, and historic houses in the area, among others. Shoutout to Mrs. Walker for getting together the research for us!
Students in my 3rd period WHI class created pictures showing the characteristics of the Paleolithic and Neolithic Eras. Some of our students have a lot of artistic talent!
As a final review project for my 1st period World History class, my students created theme parks based on civilizations we have learned about in this course. Their theme parks had to include rides, restaurants, and characteristics that were related to our study. Some students drew their theme parks, some created popsicle stick versions of their parks, and one student created a virtual theme park using the video game, MineCraft! I would post a video of my student explaining his theme park, but the file is too large. I have included a screen shot of his game that shows an overview of his park which includes a replica of the Roman Colosseum and the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. The characters he included around his park to greet guests included Julius Caesar and Constantine. My students did great even though they only had a couple of days at the end of the semester to complete this project.
My 1st period World History class completed a Byzantine Mosaic Project. They constructed mosaics made out of materials of their choosing and wrote a short paragraph to explain the importance of mosaics in Byzantine religion and architecture. They did a great job!! Check out the examples below!
This game allows you to become smarter and more charitable at the same time! For each correct answer you choose, 10 grains of rice are donated to the UN's hunger organization. You can even change the subject to basic math questions (pre-Algebra) or SAT vocabulary among other topics. Check it out if you're bored!
